BURMA: Extension of mandate for UN Special Rapporteur on human rights

On 28 March 2014, the UN HRC adopted a resolution that extended the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burma by another year.

The situation in Burma still requires an effective international monitoring mechanism, particularly as the benchmarks set by Special Rapporteur M. Ojea Quintana have not yet been met.

FIDH and its member organisation ALTSEAN-Burma actively pursued this result through multiple advocacy efforts. The extension of the UN Special Rapporteur’s mandate was included in their recommendations published earlier through a joint press release.
