Burma: UN declares detention of human rights defender Htin Kyaw arbitrary

In November 2013, the 68th session of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found the detention of Htin Kyaw arbitrary and requested reparation for his unlawful detention.

Htin Kyaw is a prominent Burmese human rights defender and leader of the Movement for Democracy Current Force, an association notably helping local communities that suffer land-grabbing. He was arrested for engaging in a peaceful protest against land eviction and sentenced under legislative acts that the UN found “offending (…) the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

This decision is in line with FIDH continued advocacy for the repeal of legislations that “fall below the standards of international human rights law”.
FIDH seized the UN WGAD of this case and reiterated its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining human rights defenders and political prisoners in Burma.
