The resolution, adopted by the EP on March 12, reiterates FIDH’s recommendations following a fact-finding mission in November 2014, the publication of a report and sustained advocacy. The EP called for the publication of the African Union’s report by the committee of inquiry and a continuation of the arms embargo. They also called on the Government of South Sudan to conduct investigations into human rights abuses, finalise legislative amendments which criminalise the recruitment and use of children, and reject legislation that would restrict the sectors in which NGOs and associations can carry out their work.
Since the end of 2013, the conflict opposing the Government of South Sudan and the SPLM/A-IO has led to a proliferation of armed groups and a continuous resupplying of weapons and recruitment of combatants, including children. Large numbers of internally displaced persons and refugees remain in precarious conditions.
