Terrorism

The terrorist attacks of unprecedented violence against the United States on September 11, 2001 have left a deep imprint on people’s minds and hearts and have revealed the multifarious threats of international terrorism with regard to peace and safety in the world. Attacks on civilian populations can in no way be justified. The perpetrators must be taken to court within the framework of strict respect of universal standards for the protection of human rights. Since that nefarious day the international situation for human rights has deteriorated considerably. States have used the excuse of “fighting terrorism” so as to implement security regulations and reduce opposition in their respective countries or at the least to legitimise violations against human rights.
