Press release

FIDH expresses its concern and strongly condemns the bombings which took place in the Southern region of Damascus, the Syrian capital, last Saturday, September 27th killing 17 civilians and injuring fourteen others. FIDH extends its condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in this attack.

FIDH nevertheless recalls that while the fight against terrorism is legitimate and necessary, combating terrorism must not jeopardize the enjoyment of fundamental human rights. Perpetrators of acts of terrorism must therefore be prosecuted in strict compliance with universal human rights standards.

Therefore, the Syrian authorities ought to make sure that the investigations and legal proceedings undertaken will not compromise the rights and liberties of Syrian citizens or non Syrian nationals under their jurisdiction.
