Libya adopts an unprecedented decree protecting victims of crimes of sexual violence

On 19 February, the Libyan government, on the initiative of the Minister of Justice, Salah El Marghany, issued a decree recognising victims of rape during the 2011 revolution as war victims.

This historic step was taken following a
conference organised, in the presence of the Minister, by FIDH, the
French Parliament and the Observatory on Gender in Crisis (a Libyan NGO)
in support of the
adoption of the text.

Spain: Towards grave setbacks for women’s rights?


At the end of 2013, the Spanish government approved a Bill imposing drastic limits on the right to abortion.

On 12 February 2014, a motion by the Socialist Party to withdraw the text was rejected by parliament. This Bill represents a serious threat to women’s rights. FIDH and its members are mobilised to prevent its adoption into law.

International Justice: Victims of sexual crimes abandonned


Today Germain Katanga, on trial
at the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against
humanity perpetrated in Eastern Congo, was acquitted of charges of rape
and sexual slavery.

After the Lubanga case, in which the Court failed to
include crimes of sexual violence, today’s verdict brings further
disillusionment to the victims of these crimes, in particular those who
courageously participated in proceedings.

Unveiling Afghanistan, the Unheard Voices of Progress”

In the run-up to presidential elections in Afghanistan, Armanshahr/OPEN ASIA and FIDH have launched a campaign giving voice to women and men in Afghanistan on the progress achieved in their country for women’s rights and their demands for the future.

Over 50 days, the Huffington Post website and the
major Afghan daily newspaper, 8 Sobh, will publish 50 interviews of influential social, political and cultural civil society figures in Afghanistan.

Crimes of sexual violence in DRC on UN agenda


On the occasion of the High Level Dialogue on fighting impunity for crimes of sexual violence in Democratic Republic of Congo, which will take place on 25 March in Geneva, FIDH will call on the DRC government and its international partners to implement the recommendations in the report: "Victims of sexual violence rarely obtain justice and never receive reparation"

Pakistan: HRCP urges expedited efforts for ensuring women’s rights


HRCP, FIDH’s member in Pakistan, calls for efforts to promote gender equality to go beyond ceremonial steps and pending legislation. Urgent steps must be taken to ensure women’s economic independence.

The exhibition “Femmes en Résistance”, which presents women’s combats on all continents, is presently on tour through East Africa.

First stop Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), from 4-22 February. On 7 March the exhibition opens in Bujumbura (Burundi), before moving on to Kampala (Uganda, April), Rwanda (October) and finishing in Nairobi (Kenya, November).
