THe CHALLENGE of a smooth transition

Article 1

It has been one year since the bloody repression of the people’s protest movement began, and those responsible for it have not yet been brought to justice. FIDH calls for the establishment of an international independent investigation commission to uncover the violations of human rights carried out between February and December 2011.

Known facts:

In February 2011, Yemen began its first ever protest movement. Assembled initially to show their solidarity with the people of Tunisia, the demonstrators wasted no time in calling for political reforms and demanding that President Ali Abdullah Saleh step down after 33 years in power.

The reaction of the State’s forces was violent. On 18 March 2011, armed undercover agents killed 52 demonstrators and injured several hundred more. Between October 22 and November 2011, 114 civilians were killed and more than 1,000 were injured as a result of being shot or by tear gas poisoning.

Women and children were not spared. Several dozens died as result of bombings by the State’s armed forces between February 2011 and January 2012.

In its document Yemen: Impunity Sanctioned, Transition Threatened, published on the occasion of the presidential election of 21 February 2012, FIDH reports on the violations committed during the repression of the protest movement.

It calls for an international independent investigation commission and warns Yemenite authorities about the consequences of guaranteeing immunity to those responsible for grave violations of human rights.
