European Parliament calls for a strong EU negotiation mandate for the UN Binding Treaty

On 18 January 2024, the European Parliament adopted by a large majority the report “Shaping the European Union’s position on the United Nations binding instrument on business and human rights”.

Having contributed to the text’s drafting through several inputs, the Internation Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) welcomed Members of European Parlement’s call on the European Union (EU) to actively engage in this negotiation process with an ambitious position. Among other key issues, the Parliament calls the EU to support provisions to strengthen access to justice and remedy for victims of corporate-related human rights abuses.

The United Nations Binding Treaty would not only complement EU rules to hold businesses accountable for their adverse impacts on human rights, but also strengthen access to remedy for victims and rights-holders by filling remaining gaps in the international legal framework.
