Elections and human rights in Russia : recurrent violations and new concerns

Russia is experiencing popular protest unseen since Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000. Shaking in its wake the myth of a passive and submissive population, the demonstrations that followed the legislative elections of December 4th 2011 are shining the light on Human Rights violations, denounced by NGOs for years : rigged elections, abusive arrests and wrongful convictions, media censorship, and complete disdain of the freedom of assembly and association.

On the eve of the presidential election in Russia, FIDH publishes a note on the Human Rights situation in the country:

 Human Rights in Russia: continuing violations and new concerns

In a very tense pre-electoral atmosphere, the situation of Human Rights defenders is more worrysome than ever. In the framework of the Observatory for the Protection of Human rights defenders (a joint programme of FIDH and OMCT), FIDH has repeatedly denounced the attacks and harassment against members of the civil society, which jeopardize their legitimate and fundamental work.
