Burma: release of Mr. Wai Phyo, Secretary of « Generation Wave »

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, an FIDH-OMCT joint programme, welcomes the release on July 26 of Burmese defender Mr. Wai Phyo, Secretary of Generation Wave, after paying a 30,000 kyat fine.
Generation Wave is a network of human rights defenders that campaigns for civil and political rights. Mr. Wai Phyo had been arrested on July 10, 2013 for alleged offences under the 1962 Printing and Publications Registrations Act for distributing unlawful printed documents in Pyay in July 2011. Two other members of Generation Wave, Messrs. Zar Ni and Wai Phyo Aung, had also been arrested in July 2011 in relation to the above-mentioned poster campaign and sentenced seven months later to three months of imprisonment and a 30,000 Kyats fine.
