Laos: Discrimination against women

11 September 2023. Today, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) submitted a report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for its pre-session of the review of Laos’ third periodic report under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

The report, jointly prepared with the Lao Movement for Human Rights (LMHR), raises concerns with regard to: 1) the marginalization of women in the country’s political life; 2) the prosecution and arbitrary detention of women activists; 3) the trafficking of women in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone; and 4) the discrimination against women in rural areas and ethnic communities.

The CEDAW’s 88th pre-session will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 30 October to 3 November 2023. It will result in the adoption of the List of Issues (LoI), a document that contains key concerns and questions that the CEDAW will transmit to the Lao government prior to the actual review session, the date of which has not yet been set.
