In a letter dated 15 October 2013 three members of the U.S. Congress urged the Secretary of State John Kerry to carefully monitor the situation of human rights in Honduras during the period leading up to the presidential elections on 24 November 2013. They denounced the violence and violations of human rights since the government was overthrown in 2009, in particular the attacks against opposition party leaders and human rights defenders. They referred to the preliminary conclusions of an FIDH mission (23-30 September 2013) on human rights and the lack of independence of the justice department that was being used during the pre-electoral period. Questions from the American authorities are encouraging the international community to support free, transparent, multi-party elections in Honduras.
