This month has seen a complaint filed in 2009 by the three prominent Sudanese human rights defenders, Osman Hummeida, Amir Suliman and Monim Elgak, declared admissible by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). Facing a judicial system wholly controlled by the State, the defenders turned to the ACHPR, which has agreed that the weaknesses of the Sudanese justice system prevents them from obtaining redress for any potential rights violation.
Arrested in November 2008, the three defenders were tortured by the National Security and Intelligence Services (NISS). Their crime? Supposed cooperation with the International Criminal Court in the case pending against Sudanese President, Omar Al Bashir.
The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (FIDH – OMCT) welcomes this important decision, and underlines the hope that it embodies for the hundreds of Sudanese activists, political opponents and other victims of NISS brutality, who continue to suffer barbarism at the hands of NISS agents.
The Commission must now recognise the harm suffered by these human rights defenders and address strong recommendations to the Sudanese authorities that they end the lawlessness and impunity prevailing in the country.
