SUDAN: UN Human Rights Council condemns human rights violations and strengthens its monitoring capacity

On 26 September 2014, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted a resolution on Sudan condemning violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in the conflict-affected regions and calling for an independent investigation into the excessive use of force against protestors. It also strengthened the monitoring capacity of the UN Independent Expert on the Sudan. This step towards accountability for human rights violations could mark a turning point in the HRC’s response to the situation in Sudan.
FIDH and its member organization ACJPS, in coordination with partner NGOs, have advocated for the adoption of a resolution strengthening the Independent Expert’s mandate to monitor and to publicly report on violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
