On 20 July 2012, the International Court of Justice, seized of the matter in 2009 by Belgium, confirmed Senegal’s obligation under the UN Convention against Torture, to try Hissène Habré in the shortest time or extradite him.
On 22 August 2012, the Senegalese government and the African Union adopted an accord for the establishment of an African Extraordinary Chambers within the existing Senegalese court structure to prosecute international crimes committed in Chad between 1982 and 1991.
For over 10 years FIDH and its member organisations have mobilised victims of international crimes committed under Habré’s regime in Chad to ensure justice is served.
