The leading human rights defender and President of the Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Incarcerated Persons, an FIDH partner organization, was released on September 29. Detained on May 15 for allegedly "being a danger to internal and external state security", Pierre Claver is no stranger to persecution and judicial harassment for his outspoken human rights activities.
Following its advocacy meetings with EU deciders, FIDH welcomes the European Parliament’s resolution of September 18 condemning his detention and calling for his immediate and unconditional release. The release of Pierre Claver being provisional, FIDH and the Observatory will continue to mobilize the international community through the #ForFreedom campaign and brief the relevant EU actors and institutions.
