The declaration by the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights strongly condemns this detention which it calls judicial harassment of this human rights defender and demands his immediate and unconditional release.
Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, President of the Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Incarcerated Persons, an FIDH partner organisation, has been detained since May 15 for "being a danger to internal and external state security". His politically motivated arrest comes on the heels of his investigation of, and the public statements he made, about the military training centres for young people in Burundi.
FIDH is actively fighting his detention through its #ForFreedom campaign and that of its Burundi organisations #‎FreeMbonimpaPC / ‪#‎VendrediVert. FIDH has sent an urgent appeal from the Observatory to all human rights associations and has called on the ACHPR’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights on several occasions to make a statement on the matter.
