10 December 2008: the Council of Togolese Ministers takes an essential first
step on the path to the abolition of capital punishment with the passing of a
bill aiming to abolish the death penalty.
The FIDH and its member organization in Togo, the Togolese League for Human
Rights, contributed to the passing of this bill, meeting several times with
Togolese authorities during high-level missions.
Parliamentarians will soon have to make a decision on this bill; they will
have to overcome their differences and unite for the final abolition of this
cruel and inhumane punishment.
