Paris, August 19, 2003 - The International
Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) expresses its strongest condemnation
at today’s attack against the United Nations headquarters
in Baghdad.
The FIDH recalls that such an attack against civilians is strictly
prohibited under international human rights law and international
humanitarian law. The FIDH calls for the perpetrators of this
attack to be identified and tried in accordance with International
Law.
The FIDH expresses its sympathy with the victims of these attacks
including all UN staff and Sergio Vieira de Mello, Special Representative
of the UN Secretary General and UN High Commissioner on Human
Rights injured during the blast
The FIDH fears that this attack might undermine the United
Nations efforts in the reconstruction of Iraq and in monitoring
human rights in Iraq.
