Slimane Bouchuiguir, Secretary General of LLHR, addressed the UN Human Rights Council at a special session in Geneva on 25 February 2011 where he had the opportunity to explain the present alarming situation in Libya. He also addressed the acts of crime committed by Gaddafi against peaceful demonstrators who were protesting to claim their rights, which are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Conventions that are based on it. The Secretary General of LLHR has described these acts as crimes against humanity, calling for their perpetrators to be brought to justice. The contribution of the Secretary General of LLHR, the only organisation representing Libya at this extraordinary session of the Human Rights Council, was acclaimed by members of those delegations present. As a result of this session, the Council is deemed to suspend Libya as one of its members. The LLHR has for several years been co-operating with the UN Human Rights Council in partnership with the Paris-based International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) which closely monitors the human rights situation. FIDH has also set up a permanent working group at its Paris head office, working 24 hours a day, under the leadership of Mrs. Souhayr Belhassen and Mr. Antoine Bernard, President and Chief Executive Officer of FIDH respectively. The close coordination between the LLHR and FIDH has been continuing ever since the outbreak of the demonstrations against the dictatorship of Colonel Gaddafi.
