Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was transferred today to the Insein prison in Yangoon, and appeared before a special court for charges relating to violation of the rules surrounding her house arrest. She may face a three years prison sentence under the pretext that a US citizen came to her house on his own initiative.

"Imprisoning Daw Aung San Suu Kyi while she should have been released from house arrest at the end of this month comes as a slap in the face of the Burmese people and the international community", commented Souhayr Belhassen, President of FIDH. "I wrote this morning to the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, to request his urgent action, and to bring the issue on the agenda of the UN Security Council. I also wrote to the ASEAN Secretary General since this regional inter-governmental organization has an influential role on the Burmese military", she added.

FIDH is also mobilizing other key players such as the Chinese, Russian and Indian governments, the European Union and the United States. "Only through strong and coordinated action will the international community bring about real change in Burma, subjected to one of the most repressive regimes in the world", concluded Ms. Belhassen.
