Europe, champion of Human Rights? Significant differences exist among the countries of this continent. The adoption of anti-terrorism legislation has increased restriction of freedoms. In addition, the forced transition toward a free-market economy has aggravated the economic and social rights situation in many European countries. In some of these countries, this transition has been accompanied by renewed authoritarianism and a muzzled civil society. Between 2001 and 2003, the FIDH brought increasing attention to the situation of Human Rights in Europe and enlarged and reinforced its network in the region.
